A rumor suggests that the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 could have a temperature monitor. This new feature, reported by ETNews, would likely join existing health monitoring features on the Galaxy Watch4, such as an ECG, heart rate, blood pressure and blood oxygen level monitors, plus body composition measures.

The reported new feature would allow the smartwatch to measure the wearer’s skin temperature. The device can then use this information to alert you to increased body temperature, which could indicate a fever. A user could also use the temperature data to track their menstrual cycle.

It may also be the case that this temperature measuring technology is rolled out to other devices, such as the Galaxy Buds. According to ETNews, the body temperature is measured on the Samsung earphone by detecting infrared waves emitted from the eardrum.

A temperature sensor is already available in smartwatches such as the Fitbit Sense, but this technology is not available on Samsung devices. It’s also worth noting that wrist temperature measurements have not always been accurate in the past, with factors like sunlight affecting the result.

ETNews claims that Samsung has developed a new technology to remove this inaccuracy, a unique selling point for the gadget. The rumors also suggest that the Samsung Watch5 will be released in August.
