ST. CLAIR COUNTY, MI – A St. Clair County man accused of trying to shoot his wife and making up a story about an intruder to allegedly cover up the crime has been bound over to circuit court for trial.

Gregory Ringel on Monday, July 11, faced preliminary examination in 72nd District Court on charges of assault with intent to murder, two counts of felony firearm, discharging a firearm in a building, and false report of a felony.

At the culmination of the hearing, District Court Judge Michael Hulewicz ruled there was enough probable cause for Ringel to stand trial.

On Thursday, July 14, a sixth charge of tampering with evidence also was added against Ringel, according to online court records.

Deputies from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office responded around 3 a.m. on March 29 to Ringel’s Casco Township home following reports of a home invasion, police previously said.

A person entered the home through a garage with a shotgun, walked through the kitchen, and knocked over a steel tumbler, waking up a woman who was asleep in her bedroom, police said the report indicated.

The woman got out of her bed to check on the noise and was met at the bedroom doorway by a man holding a shotgun, police said. When the man tried to shoot the woman but missed, she was able to shut the door on the gun barrel, keeping the man from entering the room.

The woman’s husband, asleep in another room, woke at the sound of the disturbance, grabbed a handgun from his nightstand, and tried to investigate what was happening.

The man told police he shot in the direction of the intruder as he was fleeing after seeing a shadow leaving the home. He then went to check on his wife. Seeing she was not harmed, the man then continued looking for the suspect and called the police.

The sheriff’s office said that continued investigation into the incident began to reveal “inconsistencies and unexplained facts.”

Police also said the husband was having an affair with a former coworker from out of state.

Police said Ringel confessed in an interview to making up the home invasion and admitted to using a single-shot, 12-gauge shotgun to enter his wife’s bedroom and try to kill her.

Now that his case is headed to circuit court, Ringel can either plea as charged, proceed to trial or accept potential plea agreements offered by prosecutors.
