This is your Friday update, which takes a quick look at the week ahead and some developments that El Paso Matters is following.
Walmart Shooting Status Hearing: A second status hearing in the El Paso Walmart shooting trial has been set for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 13 in the 409th District Court in the Enrique Moreno County Courthouse. Patrick Crusius, who is in federal custody, is not expected to be there. The discussion topic for the hearing is not public record, according to court documents. During a July 1 status hearing, 409th District Court Judge Sam Medrano issued a gag order which directed all attorneys and family members to stop discussing any matters related to the case in public.
Labor Day Closings: All city, county, state and federal offices will be closed on Monday in observance of Labor Day. The University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso Community College and all public schools will also be closed. Neither the El Paso County Commissioners Court nor the El Paso City Council will meet on Monday.
César Chávez Holiday: César Chávez Day is now an official city holiday as the El Paso City Council voted on Tuesday to honor the legacy of Chávez, a farmworker and community organizer who improved the working conditions of millions of farmworkers. The city holiday for César Chávez Day will be observed on the last Monday in March, which next year will fall on Friday, March 31, 2023.
