BRIDGEPORT — Two residents were charged Wednesday evening in connection with a drive-by shooting that killed two men last month, according to Bridgeport police.
Police believe Jahmir Daniel, 18, of Bridgeport, opened fire from the back of a scooter on Fairfield Avenue on July 10. The shots killed 32-year-old Hartford man Ramon Peguero, who police said was the intended target, and 18-year-old Bridgeport resident Kazzmaire Dorsey, who was struck by a stray bullet, police said in a news release Wednesday night.
At the time, Peguero and Dorsey were waiting at the Atlas gas station near a group of riders on dirt bikes, ATVs and motorcycles. Peguero and Dorsey were rushed to the hospital where Peguero was later pronounced dead. Dorsey died from his injuries about a week after.
Evidence showed that Daniel allegedly tried to evade capture by destroying evidence. Hours after the shooting, he and several others, including 19-year-old Jack Vaz, of Bridgeport, stashed the scooter used in the murder in a wooded area in the city’s North End, police said.
Daniel was charged with murder with special circumstances, two counts of murder, carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal possession of a firearm and third-degree larceny. He is being held on $5 million bond, according to police.
Vaz was charged with second-degree hindering prosecution and tampering with evidence. He is being held on $750,000 bond.
Both Daniel and Vaz are scheduled to be arraigned in court Thursday, police said.
The Bridgeport Police Department continues to investigate the case and expects to make more arrests.
