While girls are wearing makeup at younger ages than just a generation before, not all moms are ready to allow it.

For many young girls, wearing makeup is a fun way to express themselves. However, seeing girls their ages in magazines or on social media all done up may make them want to wear makeup at an age earlier than mothers are comfortable with. And because of this, mothers need to reason with their daughters who want to wear makeup when they are not ready to allow it yet.

The age when girls are wearing makeup has gotten younger over the past generation. According to Cosmopolitan, girls are now starting to wear makeup at the age of 11. This is three years younger than in generations past.

Whether this is from social media influencing, celebrities of the same age wearing makeup, or whatever the case may be, younger girls than ever want to wear a complete face of makeup. Something that many mothers are not quite ready for.

Here is how to reason with your daughter who wants to wear makeup but you will not allow it.

To understand why daughters want to wear makeup, mothers should find out the reasons behind it. This way, a meaningful conversation can be had without using hypotheticals for a heart-to-heart talk.

According to NorthJersey.com, there could be any number of reasons that tweens or younger want to wear makeup. Some of those reasons include:

It may not be because tweens are wanting to look older, per the publication. It may not even be social media influencing. It could simply be that the exposure to makeup at a young age in daily life makes adolescent girls want to wear it as well.

And why would they not want to? It is glamorous and fun. But until they reach the age that is deemed appropriate, mothers need to explain why makeup is only reserved for certain occasions versus something being worn daily.

The age at which daughters can wear makeup will vary with all mothers. And there is no right or wrong answer for when this is. However, when telling daughters that they are too young to wear makeup, there should be solid reasons why mothers feel this way, versus giving the blanket statement, "I told you so."

According to NewFolks, the first thing that mothers can do is explain that wearing makeup is not only about wearing makeup. It entails other things such as skincare, brush cleaning, and keeping makeup clean as well. Something younger girls may not yet be ready for. And until mothers feel like this level of responsibility can be maintained, wearing makeup is not appropriate.

Further, mothers can express that they understand that girls are trying to express themselves. But, instead of wearing makeup, per the publication, they can express themselves with perhaps some temporary hair color or even different clothing.

The biggest problem comes when makeup is allowed sometimes but not always, according to NewFolks. And when this comes up in conversation, it can be simply explained that makeup may be appropriate for performances or play in the house but for everyday life, it simply is something young girls are not ready to wear yet.

After the explanation is given about why makeup cannot be worn at a young age, mothers can let their daughters know at what age they will allow makeup and what makeup is allowed at those ages.

According to Mintel, over half of 12 to 14-year-olds wear makeup of some sort. This includes mascara, eye shadow, eyeliner, and eyebrow pencils. This seems to give an indicator as to when most mothers are fine with letting their daughters wear some form of makeup on a regular basis.

Further still, 80 percent of girls ages nine to 11 years of age use beauty and personal care products, per the publication. This includes skin and hair care products.

As such, starting with a skincare routine may be a good jumping-off point for mothers before allowing their daughters to wear makeup. Then, when it appears that tweens or teens are mature enough to keep up that routine, adding in some makeup may be appropriate.

Regardless of what age mothers deem to be appropriate to allow their daughters to wear makeup, the best thing they can do is be transparent about why girls need to wait and when they will be allowed to wear particular products. This will hopefully keep the conversations from getting heated and give adolescents something to look forward to when the age comes when makeup can be worn.
